OPERATIONS ON FRACTIONS
  1. ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION
         A. Similar Fractions
Simply add or subtract the numerators and retain their denominators.
               example: 1/8 + 4/8 = 5/8

         B. Dissimilar Fractions
Find the LCD of the fractions first then change them to their equivalent fraction using the
LCD. Proceed with addition or subtraction as in similar fractions.
               example: 1/2 +1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6

      2.  MULTIPLICATION
Multiply first the numerators then multiply the denominators. Write the answer in lowest
           terms.
           example: 2/3 x 3/5 = 6/15 = 2/5

     3. DIVISION
To divide fractions, multiply the dividend to the reciprocal of the divisor.
          example: 7/15 divided by 3/5 = 7/15 x 5/3 = 35/45 = 7/9

This chart could be helpful, try watching the video as well.

Try solving for the following:
1. 2/9 + 6/9
2. 7/11 -3/11
3. 3/4 + 1/12
4. 1/2 - 3/7
5. 8/9 x 2/5
6. 4/3 x 3/4
7. 2/7 x 5/8
8. 27/35 divided by 9/25

GETTING TO KNOW FRACTIONS

FRACTIONS
  • used to represent part of a whole or part of a set
  • expressed in the form p/q

*FRACTIONS MAY BE CLASSIFIED AS SIMILAR OR DISSIMILAR, PROPER OR IMPROPER
SIMILAR  FRACTIONS
-fractions which have the same denominators
       example:1/5, 3/5, 4/5

DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS
      -fractions which have different denominators
       example: 1/2, 2/13, 5/8

PROPER FRACTIONS
-the numerator is less than the denominator
       example: 1/3, 6/7, 4/10

IMPROPER FRACTIONS
-the numerator is greater than the denominator
       example: 8/7, 13/2,  5/3

***EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS
-Equivalent fractions name the same number but use different terms.
      examples: 1/2 and 3/6, 2/3 and 4/6

THIS CHART MAY HELP YOU VISUALIZE SIMILAR FRACTIONS.
