OPERATIONS ON FRACTIONS

1. ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

         A. Similar Fractions
               Simply add or subtract the numerators and retain their denominators.
               example: 1/8 + 4/8 = 5/8

         B. Dissimilar Fractions
               Find the LCD of the fractions first then change them to their equivalent fraction using the
               LCD. Proceed with addition or subtraction as in similar fractions.
               example: 1/2 +1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6 

      2.  MULTIPLICATION
           Multiply first the numerators then multiply the denominators. Write the answer in lowest
           terms.
           example: 2/3 x 3/5 = 6/15 = 2/5

     3. DIVISION
          To divide fractions, multiply the dividend to the reciprocal of the divisor.
          example: 7/15 divided by 3/5 = 7/15 x 5/3 = 35/45 = 7/9
