GETTING TO KNOW FRACTIONS

FRACTIONS
  • used to represent part of a whole or part of a set
  • expressed in the form p/q
                                                  

*FRACTIONS MAY BE CLASSIFIED AS SIMILAR OR DISSIMILAR, PROPER OR IMPROPER
SIMILAR  FRACTIONS
      -fractions which have the same denominators
       example:1/5, 3/5, 4/5

DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS
      -fractions which have different denominators
       example: 1/2, 2/13, 5/8

PROPER FRACTIONS
      -the numerator is less than the denominator
       example: 1/3, 6/7, 4/10

IMPROPER FRACTIONS
      -the numerator is greater than the denominator
       example: 8/7, 13/2,  5/3

***EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS
      -Equivalent fractions name the same number but use different terms.
      examples: 1/2 and 3/6, 2/3 and 4/6
